Genetics, environment and endocrine diseases

Ordovas Jose M

Current knowledge supports the notion that the onset and progression of endocrine and age-related diseases depend on an individual’s metabolic flexibility. With respect to cardiometabolic diseases, especially in older persons, several factors act in concert and converge to challenge metabolic flexibility. These include an inadequate diet, insufficient physical activity, chronodisruption, decreased metabolic reserve, altered gut microbiome, and reduced immune system capaci...

Di-George syndrome presenting with hypocalcaemia and personality disorder in adulthood – a case report

Jose M , Iqbal N , Gaut P , Balakrishnan D , Maksoud H

We report the case of a 42-year-old transsexual with Di-George syndrome (DGS) presenting in adulthood with profound hypocalcaemia and personality disorder. The patient had multiple hospital admissions with episodes of deliberate self-harm and recurrent seizures. Routine investigations revealed hypocalcaemia secondary to hypoparathyroidism. The diagnosis of DGS was delayed until six years later. The clue to the underlying condition was the finding of DGS in the patient’s d...

Cayon-Blanco Manuel , Cepero Dolores , Lopez-Perez M Jose , Garcia-Garcia-Doncel Lourdes , Baena-Nieto Maria Gloria

Introduction: Obesity is one of the most important problems worldwide in recent times. Groupal lifestyle intervention programmes are efficacious in the management of obesity. While exercise and healthy dietary habits have consistently been shown to improve various metabolic markers, adherence to these behaviors is low and methods that increase adherence to health behaviors are needed. Objective: The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the effec...

Heterozygous deficiency of endoglin decreases insulin and hepatic triglyceride levels during high fat diet

Beiroa Daniel , Amparo Romero-Pico , Carmen Langa , Carmelo Bernabeu , Miguel Lopez , Lopez-Novoa Jose M , Ruben Nogueiras , Carlos Dieguez

Introduction: Endoglin is a transmembrane auxiliary receptor for transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) that is predominantly expressed on proliferating endothelial cells. It plays a wide range of physiological roles but its importance on energy balance or insulin sensitivity has been unexplored.Material and methods: Heterozygous deficient mice (HZ) were fed standard chow or high fat diet during 16 weeks. Blood glucose levels were measured after ...

Prevalence of androgen deficiency in males with metabolic syndrome: relation between hormonal and metabolic parameters

Becerra Antonio , Perez-Lopez Gilberto , Menacho Miriam , Rodriguez-Molina Jose M , Lucio M Jesus , Asenjo Nuria , Villar Rosa

Androgen deficiency in the aging male has become an actual topic due to the aging population and finding from different studies that shown a progressive decline of serum levels of age-related testosterone. These levels have been inversely related with markers of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. The aim of this observational study was to investigate the relation of endogenous testosterone and other sex hormones with different components of me...

Objective: Papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTM) is a malignant thyroid tumour with potential multifocality and diameter ≤1 cm. Usually is found like incidentaloma, and the epidemiology is not clearly established. We have analysed their epidemiologic in La Palma Island at last 10 years.Patients and methods: We collected all cases of PTM diagnosed in 345 consecutive thyroid surgeries performed for whichever benign thyroid disease (thyrogloss duct c...

Changes in lipid profile 5 years after bariatric surgery: laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass versus laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy

Climent Elisenda , Benaiges David , Flores-Le Roux Juana A , Ramon Jose M , Julia Helena , Pedro-Botet Juan , Goday Albert

Importance: Few studies have compared mid-term results of laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass versus laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and none have focussed on lipid profile. Objectives: The main objective of this study was to compare laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass versus laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy with respect to 5-year remission rate of the different lipid disturbances. Secondary outcomes included relapse, late remission and incidence rates...

Subclinical atheromatous disease detection improves cardiovascular event prediction in chronic kidney disease with and without diabetes

Palanca Ana , Castelblanco Esmeralda , Betriu Angels , Valdivielso Jose M , Perpinan Hector , Puig-Domingo Manel , Fernandez Elvira , Mauricio Didac , Alonso Nuria

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients with and without diabetes mellitus (DM). Traditional cardiovascular risk factors fail to fully account for the increase in cardiovascular risk in these patients. The NEFRONA study is a large, multicentre, prospective, observational study that evaluated atheromatous disease (AD) in the carotid and femoral territories in a large cohort of Spanish CKD ...
